Ear Reshaping (Otoplasty)
Ear reshaping surgery, also called otoplasty, may be performed on patients of all ages. Patients who seek ear reshaping or reconstruction with Dr. Ramin Behmand are often:
- Young school-age children who are having social difficulties with their peers due to noticeably protruding or misshapen ears
- Adults who wish to improve various deformities of the ears for cosmetic reasons
- Older adults with skin cancers affecting the ear that require reconstruction after removal of the cancer.
The Ear Surgery Procedure
Dr. Behmand performs ear surgery by contouring, repositioning, and reshaping the ear cartilage. These adjustments are based on the anatomic origins of the unwanted shape. By meticulously shaping the ear cartilage and sculpting the key elements seen in the normal ear, Dr. Behmand is typically able to create a more desirable appearance for the ear. Incisions are generally well-hidden in the crease at the back of the ear and are often not visible once the normal healing period has taken place.
After Your Ear Reshaping Procedure
After surgery, the ears will be dressed with protective wraps. These will be replaced with a more lightweight “headband” style of bandage after a few days. Patients will be released to go home shortly following completion of the procedure. Most patients will only experience minimal bruising, swelling, and discomfort.
Dr. Behmand will provide patients with post-operative instructions prior to ear reshaping surgery, and he will ask that they follow these instructions to optimize results. While adults may return to work or school approximately one week after surgery, young children typically require a longer break from their usual play environments and peers to protect the newly shaped ear during the early healing period. Heavy activity or exercise should be avoided for about 4 weeks after surgery, though Dr. Behmand will determine the appropriate length of time for each individual.
“You were the perfect surgeon for our daughter. You were so attentive to her wishes and really went out of your way to get to know her as a person. As you know, I was very nervous about her surgery, but you made us comfortable throughout the whole process but most importantly you made her feel at ease. Thank you for your tender heart and encouraging words. You definitely have a gift!
Cost
Surgery can vary, but is generally between $8,000 and $12,000.
