Vaginal rejuvenation, also known as vaginoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to tighten and tone the walls and muscles of the vagina. Many women lose vaginal muscle strength following childbirth but may also experience this concern due to extreme weight fluctuations, age, strenuous activity and lifting, and genetics. There are many reasons a woman may consider vaginal rejuvenation, and Dr. Ramin Behmand understands this can be a sensitive issue that can often cause feelings of embarrassment. He will take care to listen to all patient concerns and answer any questions they may have.
Vaginal rejuvenation strictly addresses the vaginal canal and vaginal opening, and it does not affect the external cosmetic appearance of the inner and outer labia. For patients who are interested in addressing the cosmetic appearance of the inner and outer labia, we encourage you to read about the labiaplasty procedure, as this might be an option for you.
Vaginal Rejuvenation Candidates
Vaginal rejuvenation may be able to help minimize a variety of unwanted symptoms stemming from vaginal inelasticity. Some common reasons for undergoing a rejuvenation procedure include:
- Inelasticity of the vaginal wall or opening (most often following childbirth)
- Perceived loss of overall vaginal resiliency, which may cause:
- Discomfort when using tampons
- Difficulty achieving sexual stimulation
- Noticeable sensation of lost muscle strength
- Audible sounds from vagina during intercourse or physical activity
It is important to note that these symptoms may be caused by other factors and a professional examination can help determine the origin. Regardless of the reasons for desiring vaginal rejuvenation, Dr. Behmand strives to make his patients feel as comfortable as possible, and he will listen attentively to all expressed concerns and goals for the outcome.
Many patients choose to combine vaginal rejuvenation with labiaplasty. This combination will allow Dr. Behmand to reduce excess skin of the inner and outer labia if so indicated, as well as perform internal muscle tightening.
Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure
Vaginal rejuvenation will take place at our private surgery center in Walnut Creek. This procedure is done under general anesthesia to help ensure the optimal patient experience.
The procedure typically takes 2 hours, and it is done on an outpatient basis. Most patients are able to return home shortly following the completion of the procedure.
Vaginal Rejuvenation Recovery
Within 1 to 2 hours after the surgery, the patient will be released from the surgery center to begin recovery. She will be provided with detailed post-operative instructions and must follow these instructions carefully to help ensure a complete recovery.
Most patients experience mild discomfort following vaginal rejuvenation, and will be prescribed pain medication to help control any discomfort. Our patients typically only need to take this for the first 3 to 4 days after their procedure.
Dr. Behmand prefers that patients take at least 5 to 7 days off of work to optimize recovery. Within this time, it is important to rest. Patients will be instructed to take at least 4 weeks off from the gym and any other strenuous activity, and they will be instructed to refrain from engaging in solo or accompanied sexual intercourse, as well as tampon use, for at least 6 weeks following surgery.
